Nearshore Geotechnical

Fugro in South-East Asia operates specialist vessels and barges for nearshore site investigations that are capable of operating in water depths of up to 45m.

The vessels may be equipped with specialist equipment for geotechnical testing including: -

  • Conventional nearshore drilling and sampling techniques using high quality piston samples, standard penetration tests, shear vane tests.
  • Offshore drilling and sampling techniques using 5" API drillpipe and wireline sampling techniques.
  • Marine cone penetration testing using either penetration equipment mounted on deck or seabed systems operated on the seabed remotely from the vessel.

Sungei Mutiara

The Sungei Mutiara is a geotechnical barge with capability to work in water depths up to 45m. Operating with a shallow draft, she is also ideally suited for working in shallow waters that is close to shore. The wide range of water depths in which she can operate makes her a very versatile craft for pipeline and outfall investigations, pre and post dredge surveys and other marine site investigations.

Sungei Mutiara is capable of performing drilling and sampling operations, seabed cone penetration testing and can also be mobilised with vibrocoring and seabed grab sampling equipment.

Since the barge was commissioned she has worked extensively in the South-East Asia region providing support for dredging and reclamation activities, marine construction and pipeline projects. Drilling and sampling can either be performed using conventional nearshore drilling and sampling techniques where sampling and testing is performed using drill rods run from deck or using offshore drilling and wireline sampling techniques, the latter being more suitable in deeper waters or where conditions dictate the deployment of such equipment.

Marine Cone Penetration Testing

Fugro own and operate sophisticated seabed cone penetration testing systems in South-East Asia. These systems are able to be deployed either from our own vessels, such as the Sungei Mutiara or from third party vessels supplied by Clients or on charter.

The Fugro Wheeldrive CPT unit (WDU) has been used on numerous projects over the years and has an enviable reputation with Clients in the region.

Production rates achievable using this system provide a cost effective solution for site investigations for dredging and reclamation projects, cable burial studies and outfall construction.

When mobilised onboard Fugro vessels equipped with drilling capability, Clients have the flexibility to develop the most suitable and cost effective site investigation programme without the need to mobilise additional vessels.
